The rural region

Alongside its industrial settlements (port operations, aerospace companies etc.) to the east along the River Weser, the Wesermarsch is a district with a strong agricultural dominance. 60,000 hectares (96% of the agricultural land area) is exclusively used as grassland and it thus represents one of the largest continuous areas of arable land in Germany. The main focus of agricultural production lies on dairy farming and pasture farming.

The current programme of the European Union for developing rural areas within the period 2007-2013 reflect the requirement that rural areas be more than just agronomical regions. In order to secure a vital rural development, sources of income like tourism, the skilled trades, crafts and business represent further key pillars of a rural economic region.

The Wirtschaftsförderung Wesermarsch GmbH is responding to these requirements at the local level with an integrated rural development approach:

  • 'Regional marketing' of quality agricultural products (Assocation proRegion Wesermarsch/Oldenburg e.V.)
  • Projects and network-building in the fields of nature, culture, tourism, regional products (Leader).

A close interconnection was established in the process with the major regional centres (Nordlichter Region Weserland) and a transnational , intensive knowledge and project transfer takes place among rural regions in the North Sea region (Interreg III B - North Sea Rural).
